Autotransfusion Explained

Autotransfusion is a safer alternative to donated blood (“allogenic” transfusion).  Allogenic transfusions have a number of potential complications including allergic reactions, bacterial infection, infectious diseases, supply and matching constraints, and religious concerns.  Autotransfusion, or cell salvage, is a process where a patient’s own shed blood is cleaned and returned to the patient in washed red blood cell format.  Recycling a patient’s own blood avoids adverse complications associated with blood bank transfusions, and reduces the costs of donor blood procurement.  Autotransfusion is an important component of sound blood management practice, and is used in many surgical procedures including spine and orthopedic, brain and spinal cord, cardiothoracic, vascular, trauma, organ transplantation, general, and others.
